A single mother ghoul who’s around 22-25 who had a miscarriage in her eighth month of pregnancy is visibly jealous of Touka. Touka confronts her about it and she breaks down. (name her if you want to or not, I just need something like this to happen :))

Mai still remembers staring at those angry kids as they surrounded her. She didn’t take their threat seriously. Because they were babies, just like the one in her swollen stomach.

Now she’s fleeing with Kirishima Touka, and sees the young woman protecting her stomach from the Reaper’s knives.

Mai’s eyes fill with tears as she helps the Aogiri children down the hall. 

She still remembers asking the Oggai if they were okay. Because she was stupid and nice.

Her strength has returned now. But she doesn’t want to use it, not even against the investigators, because that will be an acknowledgement that her baby died.

She still remembers doubling over as their kagunes pierced her stomach. She remembers screaming more in horror than pain, and the One-Eyed King swooping in to rescue her.

“Mai, can you bring up the rear?” Touka asks.

“Of course. I’m not important,” Mai snaps.

Touka looks shocked, and a bit furious. Mai feels some shame for her selfishness, but she should be close to giving birth now, not an expendable.

But for these kids, Mai falls back. She uses her koukaku to form a shield to block of the tunnel. The investigators who followed will certainly slice through it, but at least they’ll be slowed.

Babies killing babies. And Touka gets to have her child, but Mai doesn’t. 

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Touka demands when Mai catches back up. “This is a moment I need to count on you!”

“I know your secret,” Mai growls. Shouts ring out down the tunnel. No, they can’t have cut through so fast. She halts.

“So?” Touka fires back. 

“So…I want to be like you,” Mai cries. She knows this isn’t the time or place to fall apart, but she’s facing her child’s murderers and someone else has a living child and it fucking hurts!

Touka’s eyes widen. “I wish you were, too.”

Mai nods, sniffling. 

She’s not mentally up to fighting these investigators. But if she can just slow them down…

“Please live. I need you to live,” Mai pleads, stepping back. 

Touka hesitates. In the midst of their flight, she reaches out and hugs the other woman she barely knows.

And then she has to go. 

And Mai waits for the investigators. She constructs another shield, but stays behind it. She’ll make sure no one hurts any more kids, born or unborn.

Tatara stares at his lover, whom Eto and Noro lead back into Aogiri’s hideout. “She collapsed?”

“She’s sick,” Eto says briskly, laying her down on Tatara’s bed.  

“With what?”

“A child.” Eto flashes a smile before dancing out. 

Tatara’s world tilts. He sucks in air and approaches the bed, on which she lays. Her eyes are shut; she wears a trace of a smile on her face. She looks peaceful. 

He stares down at her. He would love nothing more than to live with her.

But CCG will kill her for this. He can’t protect two people. He can’t protect a family. He couldn’t even protect Fei and Yan.

Noro brushes Tatara’s shoulder.

“Hey.” She stares. “Tatara? Where am I?”

“You’re pregnant.” Tatara doesn’t mince words. “Y/N, you have to end it.”

“What?” she gasps. “No!”

“It’s not a question,” Tatara snaps. “You’ll miscarry and then you could die, too. I can’t protect two of you.” 

“Noro can!” she insists. The masked ghoul nods. 

Traitor. Tatara scowls at him.

“Tatara, I want your child.” She narrows her eyes. “You’re just scared.” 

Tatara shakes his head wildly.

“I know you are!” She leaps up. On the bed, she’s taller than him, and she leaps into his arms. 

He catches her and allows her to pry off his mask. “I want our child, Tatara. Eto said her mother ate meat. I don’t mind. I just…this is a miracle. In the bloody war we’re in, we don’t have long to waste. Aren’t we fighting for ghoul and human children in the end? If our lives include a child, we should seize that chance while we’re here.”

She blinks back tears. “I’m scared, too.”

He draws her face to his and kisses her. “Just promise me you won’t die.” 

“For you and this baby, I’ll survive a thousand Houjis.” She kisses him back. 

She wonders if her brother would use his quinque on her if she knew she was pregnant.

Mayazumi’s face falls at Aura’s lack of response. He scuttles away quietly.

“Aura!” Sakura, another Oggai, stomps her foot. “You can at least be nice to Mayazumi.”

“Huh?” Aura is confused. How was he not nice?

“He’s imitating you,” says Sakura, as if it’s obvious. “He likes you.”

She stalks away, leaving Aura more confused than ever.

When he finds the child, he says stiffly, “Want to come for a walk with me?”

Mayazumi brightens. “Okay!”

Aura leads him to the hospital. “I’m visiting my aunt. I thought she might like to see one of the Oggai.”

“I’ll tell her you’re the best squad leader ever.” Mayazumi smiles at Aura. “You remind me of my dad, you know. He was quiet and sad a lot. I loved him very much.”

“Oh.” Aura is confused. He’s admired? The Oggai like him? 

Kiyoko showers Mayazumi with praise, and even Aura for once feels cheerful in her hospital room. She’s happy. He’s happy. Everything is good. 

“I’ll find justice for you,” Aura promises her as they leave, just as he always does.

Mayazumi clutches Aura’s arm. “Aura-san, I want to be just like you.”
