– Once Uta awakens, he dismisses Yomo’s concern and pretends everything is fine.

– Truthfully, he doesn’t recall anything he said. Hopefully he didn’t say anything super crazy ~~like being a one-eyed king.~~

– He’s disappointed when Yomo grants him space by not pressing the issue.

– So he goes out and tries to get drunk again to spur more concern from Yomo.

– Yomo catches him, figures out his passive-aggressive plan, and calls him on it.

– This time, Yomo sits Uta down and demands to know what is going on.

– Uta replies that he’s lonely and wants a friend and that’s why he does all this horrible shit.

– Yomo listens to Uta’s confessions and assures him that he won’t abandon this immoral ghoul, because Yomo isn’t judgmental at all.

– Uta hugs Yomo, and for once the stoic Yomo returns the embrace.

– Uta asks Yomo a few questions about what he said while drunk. He’s very disappointed to learn he didn’t try to kiss Yomo.

“It’s been a while,” says a voice when Uta exits HySy.

He turns around to see Yomo standing there. “Renji.”

Yomo’s arms are crossed. “We’re moving to the 24th Ward before your friend gets us all slaughtered.”

“He’s not my friend,” Uta says.

Renji’s kakugans ignite. “I know you work with him, Uta.”

Uta’s shoulders slump. “So?”

“So – how can you – people are dying, and you’re helping him, for what? A laugh?” Yomo approaches, grabs Uta by his shoulders, stares into his eyes. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“Many things,” Uta replies after a pause.

“Why won’t you tell me?”

“Trust issues?” Uta grins.

“Uta, I’m one of the few in your life you can trust, and you know that,” Yomo says wit an ironic smile. He releases Uta and steps back.

“I do, and I’m grateful.” Uta stares at the ground. “You can stay here tonight. You’ll be safe.”

“I’m late already to meet up with Ayato. The nephew I don’t trust to know that.” Yomo laughs bleakly.

“I see.” Uta knows this isn’t a break-up. He and Yomo will never forsake each other. But it still hurts. Yomo’s disappointment.

“Hey.” Yomo steps closer and sweeps him towards him. He plants a passionate kiss on Uta’s lips. “I’ll see you again.”

“Don’t get yourself killed.” Uta sighs. “Promise me.”

“I promise.” Yomo steps back. “But when I return, when it’s safe, we’re going to talk.”

“Are we?” Uta winks.

“Yeah.” And then Renji is gone, and Uta feels lonelier than ever.

Koma once asked Uta if his tattoo was about Yomo. No one is allowed to speak of what happened next.

– What happened next was Uta laughing. “Of course not,” he said.

Yomo has to laugh. He allows Uta to lead him upstairs, to his bedroom. Uta beckons for him to lay down.

“Let me massage your feet or something. Help you relax.”

“You really don’t have to.”

“I want to.” Uta slides his hand between Yomo’s thighs. He groans in respond, and Uta smiles even more at the sound. “I’m your friend, right?”

But if you really want to know: on a personal level, RenUta has an alluring star-crossed lovers dynamic (”I can neither live with you nor without you,” swoon) and Yomo and Uta’s personalities seem to balance each other, whereas Itori and Uta’s mirror each other. These makes me personally more interested in RenUta. 🙂
