uihai adventures on Father’s and Mother’s Day!

Featuring Masanori as their demon child, from @hamliet‘s “The (Mis)Adventures of GOAT.”

“Do you think Mommy will like it?” Masanori holds up a painting of cherry blossoms.

“I think it’s perfect,” Ui tells him, marveling at his paint-splattered son. Urie, the one whom Masanori begged his art lessons from, nods.

“Goody.” Masanori has another idea, but he’ll do it later so Daddy doesn’t get scared.

Daddy doesn’t like scary things, but Masanori does, and Auntie Eto loves telling him scary things.

The next day, Masanori holds out his picture to Hairu. “Look!“

Cherry blossoms. Hairu squeals and hugs him. “You’re such a talented boy.”

“I made you another drawing, too. I had to sneak into Urie’s studio later.” Masanori radiates pride.

Hairu rolls her eyes at Ui. “Sure. What is it?”

“Look!” Masanori waves a picture of Hairu – probably – lying down, with Ui kissing her. “Auntie Eto said you died once and Daddy brought you back wth a kiss, just like the movies!”

Hairu’s mouth drops open, and Ui looks ready to murder Arima’s mischievous wife.

“Is that okay?” Masanori senses his parents are upset, and he didn’t mean to hurt them. He loves them.

“Of course.” Hairu has to laugh. If Masanori wants to view her past through the fairy-tale sense, she won’t stop him. “I’m dressed like a princess, after all.”

“We do look cute, don’t we?” Ui smirks at Hairu, and she kisses him.

“Ew.” Masanori knows he drew them kissing, but still. Real life is sometimes scary.

————————————————————————

“Daaaaaaaaaadddyyyyyy!” Masanori flies into his parent’s room. “It’s father’s day!”

Ui gasps, and Hairu immediately leaps off her husband. “Masanori! Good morning!”

Her suggestions to make Ui a father again were perhaps ill-timed. Her husband now looks catatonic.

Hairu smiles from under the covers. “Go get Daddy breakfast food, and I’ll be right down.”

“Okay!” he sings.

“That was close,” Hairu whispers to Ui. “I’ll make it up to you later, once your heart rate is back to normal.”

“With this child, that will never happen.” Ui struggles out of bed and reaches for his pajamas. “Hirako was right. It’s karma.”

He smiles at Hairu. “The best kind of karma.”

Uihai date at the beach

So precious!

Ui’s heart pounds. He might vomit.

“Calm down. Now, off with your shirt.” Hairu waves sunscreen before his eyes. “You’re not turning into a sauté for the next ghoul we encounter.”

Ui pouts but obeys.

Because he’s actually scared of her seeing his bare chest.

“Ooh, you look strong,” she teases, dousing him with coconut-scented lotion. Her hands rub his back, and he’s scared to admit he loves when she touches him.

“Boop.” Hairu pokes his nose, leaving a dab of sunscreen on it. She paints his face with the oily goo, then hands the bottle to him. “Can you get my back please, Koori?”

Ui swallows and nods. She’s wearing a beautiful mint bikini adorned with jellyfish, and his pulse races every time he looks at her.

“Thank you.” She kisses the top of his head. “Do you want to help me look for seashells?”

Hairu invents a story for every shell they find, weaving together the colors and cracks to form myths Ui would have liked to read, back when he made time for reading.

“You should write them down.” He’d make time then. He knows he would.

“Maybe.” Hairu squeals as the waves wash over her feet.

“Better be careful.” Ui’s not sure what came over him, but he tosses seaweed onto her shoulder.

Hairu shrieks and kicks a mini-tsunami of salt water at him. Then he’s chasing her deeper into the water,  and she stops at the last second to send him toppling into the waves.

“Not – fair!” he gasps, struggling. He submerges himself and yanks Hairu’s feet out from under her.

“Wheeeee!” Hairu cheers.

After two hours in the sea, Hairu’s teeth are chattering.

“Nooooo.” Ui lifts her onto his shoulders, above the waves, and carries her back to shore. “Let’s warm ourselves in the sun.”

He’s not sure why he was so worried before. Her skin on his feels so natural.

“I love you,” Hairu whispers, and he smiles.

Pregnancy scenarios for Hairu and Ui?

The moment of truth

Ui paces outside CCG’s medical unit. Hairu collapsed on Arima Squad’s latest mission, and now he, Arima, Hirako, and the kids are gathered in the waiting room.

A nurse appears.”Are you the boyfriend of Ihei Hairu?”

Ui colors. “Well, I, uh – yes.”

“Come with me.”

Now Arima looks truly concerned, and Shio opens his mouth to ask something, but Ui’s already running after the nurse.

But instead of a dying Hairu on life support, he finds her sitting at the foot of her bed, eating a melon bun and chatting with a doctor.

“H – Hairu. Are you okay?”

“Better than okay.” Hairu stands and takes his hands in hers. She smiles from ear-to-ear. “I’m pregnant, Koori.”

Now Ui nearly faints. Hairu catches him.

“I – I know it’s a surprise, but I’m really happy. We’re having a baby, Koori.”

“I’m scared,” he whispers, clinging to her. But her excitement is damn contagious.

Someone taps his shoulder, and Ui turns around to see Arima and Hirako staring down at him. “You better be.”

———————————————————————

Two Months

“I’m the luckiest girl alive.” Hairu has to say before she finishes her vows and kisses Ui.

All of CCG claps, and bridesmaids Saiko and Hsaio hurry forward to fix her train.

Ui looks out to see Arima glowing with pride for his squad members, and he knows that if Hairu is the luckiest girl, he’s the luckiest boy.

———————————————————————

Three months

“Ooh, it’s cold.” Hairu giggles and grabs Ui’s hand. She’s lying on a table with her mostly flat belly exposed.

A nurse slides an ultrasound along. “Well, it looks like you’re having a baby boy.”

Ui gasps, and Hairu cheers.

He doesn’t deserve this level of happiness. Ui fights tears.

Hairu turns her head to him, and he sees she’s crying, too.

“Happy tears,” he assures her.

“I know.”

———————————————————————-

Five months

“Koori!” Hairu gasps. She bolts upright in the bed they share.

“What’s wrong?” Ui wakes up immediately. What if she’s dying? Losing Masanori?

“Here.” Hairu presses his hand to her belly.

His son kicks him. Ui cries out and presses his face against her stomach. Masanori will know he is loved.

———————————————————————

Six months

Hairu slides into her desk chair. “I feel like a whale, Koori.”

She frowns. “An ugly whale.”

Ui gasps. “You’re beautiful!”

“I can’t stop eating.” Hairu blinks. Her voice tears up. “I’m a whale. Worse, I’m like the binge eater from all those years ago.”

“Hey there, human, you’re not eating people.” Ui rubs her shoulders and makes  a mental note to insist Saiko bring her makeup kits over for his wife.

———————————————————————

Seven months

“What do you mean, our baby is part-ghoul?” Ui freezes.

Arima closes his office door. Hirako stands outside, guarding.

“I’m a failed ghoul,” Hairu sobs, sinking to the floor. “We all are. All the Washuus.”

“Me too,” Arima says, hoping Ui will understand. He advised Hairu against revealing the truth, but she was insistent.

“I’m sorry.” Hairu looks up at her husband. “I hurt you.”

Ui sees his wife kneeling on the office floor, fat tears rolling down her lovely cheeks, her belly swollen with their child.

He can’t believe it.

But he couldn’t believe it when she told him she was pregnant, either. This is really how life changes – in an instant.

He kneels beside her and – tentatively – touches her shoulder. “Tell me everything.”

————————————————————————

Eight months

“Our baby will be part-ghoul in a world that hates him,” Ui sobs. “Someday we’ll need to tell him what we did.”

“He’ll forgive us.” Hairu swallows. What if he doesn’t? “If you can learn to forgive me, he can forgive us.”

“There’s nothing to forgive. You can’t help how you were born.” Ui knows it’s logical and believes it with all his heart.

But he can’t help regretting it took Hairu and their baby to show him his bigotry.

————————————————————————

Nine months

“Ui, you might want to come pick up your wife.” Saiko sounds like she’s enjoying this. “We think she’s in labor.”

Ui shrieks and throws the phone across the room.

“Go!” Arima doesn’t even need to ask what’s happening, from the streaking figure leaving his office, Ui didn’t even wait for permission.

At the hospital, Hairu crushes his hand in hers. “Why did we do this again?”

“Because we love each other?”

“Masanori’s trying to eat my lady parts.”

“Hairu!” Ui cringes. He wishes he were the one in pain.

And then another nurse is here, telling her to push, and Ui is crying already.

A new wail joins the room, and in an instant, Ui is a father and Hairu a mother.

uihai in a extremely packed train

Koori Ui has never wished for ghouls before, but in this train, he wonders if maybe humanity couldn’t use some thinning out.

Well, not really. But he needs air.

“Isn’t this fun?” Hairu lets go of the pole and tries to balance as the train rounds a corner.

“Ooh!” She flies straight into Ui’s chest, sending him tumbling backwards through the swarm of people.

“I’m sorry!” Hairu reaches out her hand to haul him back up. The train jostles her closer to him. She smiles up at his eyes. “Hi.”

“Hi.” Ui likes her holding onto him. He wishes he could hold onto her without falling, but someone needs to keep them upright.

More people pile on.

“You can kiss me.”

Ui shrieks. “What?”

“You’re giving me the fairy-tale look again. So if you want to kiss me, you can. I won’t transform into a handsome prince, but I can make it fun.” Hairu wiggles her eyebrows.

“You always make it fun.”

Everyone’s hot, cranky, and desperate for oxygen. But there’s so many people, Ui and Hairu can lock lips and, without anything to hold on to, even when the train tries its best to throw them down, they stay upright.

uihai, a scene with a jealous ui

“Your dress is beautiful,” Hirako tells Hairu.

“It is,” Arima agrees.

“Thank you!” In a flutter of white, Hairu twirls around with a giggle.

Ui stares at the floor. Of course she would go for Arima. Hell, he would go for Arima if not for Hairu.

But he wants her to love him.

Hairu chatters with Arima about their upcoming mission, and Ui feels himself melting into the floor.

“Are you okay?” Hairu tilts her head as they work together later that afternoon. “You seem awfully sullen.”

“I’m fine.” Ui forces a smile. If she’s happy, he is.

But he isn’t.

“What’s wrong?” Hairu gives him her best puppy eyes. “Koori, aren’t we friends? You have to tell me.”

“I didn’t realize you wanted to be more than friends with Arima,” he mutters. If he’s lucky, he can say he’s worried about the ethics, and she’ll believe him.

What?!” Hairu shrieks. “Are you kidding me, Ui Koori?”

Ui freezes. Everyone is looking at them. Including Arima.

She stomps on his foot. “Arima was my childhood friend! It’d be like dating my brother!”

“Can you – can you keep your voice -” Ui croaks. He sounds like a zombie.

“Why would you think that?” Hairu seems genuinely upset. “Wait. Is it because he told me I look pretty?”

He blanches.

Hairu tries to hold back a tumble of excitement. “Are you – are you jealous, Koori?”

“No.”

“Don’t lie.” Hairu sticks out her tongue.

“I really – you know – like you.” Ui stammers.

“Then you’re an idiot. Arima’s doing what big brothers do so you would notice me. We planned this, or at least I did and convinced him to help, and you went and got jealous.” Hairu shakes her head. “Do you not like me?”

“I love you,” he blurts out.

Hairu gasps.

Careless for her coworkers’ prying eyes, she throws her arms around him and whispers in his ear. “Don’t be jealous, Koori. You have my heart.”

Koori and Hairu celebrate Halloween?

“Koori!” Hairu hurries into CCG decked out in a shimmering blue ballgown. Fairy wings flutter behind her, and a tiara crowns her hair.

She’s so beautiful it hurts.

“You!” Hairu gapes at him. Ui has dressed like Prince Charming, complete with a tiara that matches hers. “How did you know?”

“I made Saiko tell me your plans for Halloween. I wanted to match.” His face is as pink as her hair.

“I didn’t think you’d like dressing like a prince.” Hairu nods slyly. “It suits you.”

“I hope,” Ui says nervously. He feels silly, but Hairu is happy and that’s what he cares about.

“Let’s get into position!”

Saiko, dressed as a witch, strides past. Police Officer Urie, Samurai Shirazu, and Cat Mutsuki follow her.  “Better watch out, Inspector Bowl Cut, or I’ll hex your girlfriend.”

“Get in position!” Hairu calls.

Even Matsuri Washuu is ready – though scowling in his stormtrooper outfit, because unbeknownst to him, Yoshitoki had already planned Darth Vader.

Arima peers out of his office.

“Did you do it, Hirako?” Hell’s Angel Marude grins.

“Oh, we did,” Hairu assures him, as Shiba Hirako shoves Arima out.

Yes, his Squad managed to convince him to dress like a Roman god, complete with a toga and olive branches in his hair.

“I can’t believe you got me to agree to this,” Arima mumbles.

“You’re brilliant,” Ui whispers to Hairu. She pecks him on the cheek.

“They’re coming!” Hairu whistles, and everyone ducks back into their respective offices.

“Trick or treat!” Shio pounds at their door.

Ui opens to see Ghost Yusa, Vampire Rikai, and Zombie Shio. “Well, well, well, you’re not ghouls, so I suppose we can let you pass.”

“But just to ensure you don’t get hungry.” Hairu dumps candy into their bags.

When the kids move next door, Ui grabs Hairu and kisses her. He feels stupid, but he has to say it. “You’re my fairy princess.”

“Sooooo. What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?” Hirako sits on Ui’s desk – the nerve – and grins at Ui.

“What’s with your cheeky face?” he asks sourly.

“So grumpy. Pining away, are we?”

“What?” Ui gasps. “For who? You’re crazy!”

“Methinks thou doth protest too much.” Kiyoko Aura breezes past.

Ui turns scarlet as all the Squad 0 kids giggle. “Who?”

Arima strolls towards them, and Shio waves him over. “Arima, Arima! Do you think Ui should buy Hairu chocolates or roses for Valentine’s Day?”

Yusa and Rikai dissolve into giggles again, and even Hirako seems taken aback.

“What?” Arima frowns. Koori and Hairu? Hairu and Koori? “Hmm, yes, I can see that.” Honestly, he rather likes the idea. “Buy her what you think she’d want.”

“How do I know?” Ui whispers.

“Ask her or her friends,” Hirako whispers back.

“What’s everyone doing here? Is there a mission to prepare for?” Hairu skips over to them. “Ui, you look red, are you okay?”

Ui gurgles.

“Hypothetically,” begins Hirako.

“The kids are wondering what to buy others for Valentine’s Day,” Arima interrupts. They threw Ui, he can throw them. It’s a life lesson.

“Ooh. Roses and chocolate and candlelit dinners are nice. But you know what’s best? Telling someone they like you. I think.” Hairu imagines her perfect Valentine’s Day.

When she waltzes away, the rest of Arima Squad stares at Ui.

“Better practice that confession.” Arima turns around. “Kids, it’s practice time.”

They all stand.

“You’re welcome,” Hirako says to a mortified Ui.

@koyuki-tan @hamliet

The day dawns, the day Ui’s feared since he learned what love was.

Valentine’s Day.

If he doesn’t tell Hairu, Arima will be disappointed and Hirako will think him a coward.

He has a bouquet of chocolate roses and candlelit dinner reservations. How Arima managed to get him such pricey reservations, he wasn’t sure; all Arima said was that he had ‘a friend’ who ‘knew their way around’ Tokyo.

“It might all be for nothing,” Ui reminded him.

“It won’t,” Arima assures him.

But now Ui doubts Arima Kishou. He arrives at CCG soaked in sweat. He can feel everyone’s eyes on the chocolate bouquet in his hands. That slimy Rank 1 Furuta barely covers his laughter.

Hairu rounds the corner and smacks into him. “Koori! I didn’t see you behind – this thing.”

Her eyes widen. “Who’s this for?”

She’ll kill the girl. Just kidding. But she was not counting on losing Ui on Valentine’s Day. Unless…

“You!” Ui thrusts the bouquet in her face. “Chocolate roses, and I have dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant downtown. If you want. If you don’t, I understand, but please keep the chocolate -”

“Koori,” Hairu interrupts. She’s beaming from ear-to-ear. He remembered that entire conversation? Koori is sweeter than chocolate. “Yes, but only if you help me finish the candy.”

He breaks into a smile. “Really?”

“You’re amazing. Why wouldn’t I like you?” Hairu shivers. “I just – I thought you didn’t – you are so focused on work -”

“Chocolate!” Shio races in.

“He did it!” Rikai cheers, and Yusa hurries over. “Can we have some chocolate, too?”

Hairu blinks. “Um, okay.”

“Please make sure you have some,” says Ui.

“Not to worry.” She winks. “Tonight?”

“Tonight.”

This is a fantastic idea

Ui is not sure how he got roped into this, but his head is facing the wrong direction and one leg is over one shoulder.

Hairu, probably. She wanted to join the Quinx’s party, and even though he was uncomfortable, he went for her.

Now they’re the last two Twister survivors, battling for victory.

Hairu laughs. She looks like a pretzel covered in rose petals.

“Ui. Your turn.” Saiko spins. “Left hand, green.”

Ui screams internally.

Saiko exchanges a smirk with Shirazu. Their plot to catch Inspector Bowl Cut in a state of disarray is working.

With a groan, he plants his left hand on the nearest green he can find. His muscles tremble, but he won’t give up.

“Koori, I’m in pain.” Hairu flutters her eyes at him.

“You can fall,” he grunts.

“There’s no love to spare in Twister.” Saiko rubs her hands together. “Hairu, right foot, yellow.”

“Yellow, like the sun.” Hairu smiles and barely manages to reach around Ui.

She finds face directly over his, which is perfectly positioned upwards. “Hello there.”

“Help me,” he whispers.

“Okay.” She kisses him.

Ui shrieks and falls, taking her with him.

“Hairu cheated. That means Ui is the winner.” Saiko would be upset, but Hairu kissed Ui, and that’s even better than her plan.

Ui sputters.

“She meant it,” all the Quinx yell simultaneously – even Urie, because Mutsuki made him.

Hairu flushes and smiles at Ui. He can’t quite believe it, but he kisses her back.

“Time for spin the bottle!” yells Saiko.

@hamliet

“I’ll go first.” Saiko grins mischievously and spins the bottle. It lands on Shirazu, who turns as red as his hair.

“Oooh, Shiragin, you ready?” She claps and leans over to kiss him.

“That was too quick,” he complains, and she giggles.

“Take me to dinner and get more.”

“Hey! No propositioning!” Urie is horrified that he’s been roped into playing this juvenile game.

Hsaio looks sad. So when she spins next, Hairu considers it her duty to “stop” the bottle on Saiko.

“Ooh, what a busy night for Saiko.” She squeaks as Hsaio presses her lips to hers, for longer than Urie and Ui thought was necessary.

Judging from Saiko’s smile, she disagrees with them.

Ui spins the bottle, but to his own shame, he doctors it to land on Hairu.

She shivers with excitement as he pecks her. “Wait! Kiss me more!”

“That’s for after the party,” Saiko says, and Urie’s getting real tired of her insinuations.

Ui sits down, face as pink as Hairu’s hair.

Saiko claps her hands. “So many red faces. Who will be next? Higa, you’re up.”

“No.” Higamaru wanted Hsaio. Now he has … Aura?

Aura’s eyes are about to fall out of his skull. “Help.”

“Eee.” Higemaru knows he can’t do this halfway. If he’s gonna kiss Aura, he’ll make it count, feelings be damned. He squeezes his eyes shut and sucks Aura’s lips in his.

“This is oddly fascinating.” Shirazu is mesmerized.

“I’m scared and I want to go home,” Ui mumbles as they break away.

“Love it. That was your first kiss, wasn’t it, Aura?”

“Shut up, Saiko.”

“I’ll take that as a yes. Mucchy?” Saiko hands the bottle to Mutsuki.

They’ll all think he’s disgusting. They’re going to hate kissing him, unless he lands on –

In fact, he does land on Urie.

Saiko smirks. Their leader is not displeased and she knows it.

“Is this okay?” Mutsuki murmurs, leaning close to Urie.

“Yes.”

Their lips brush, and Urie doesn’t look disgusted. He looks at Mutsuki with wonder in his eyes.
