You are so sweet. ❤
Her heart pounds in her ears. She leans over to gag and silently curses herself for feeling ill from the spores.
She doesn’t have time to feel ill. She has to – she has to find him – she has to tell him she knows –
Goddamn idiot hasn’t seen her since he abdicated his position at CCG. As if she hadn’t already figured out his heritage. As if she’d be scared.
Fortunately for her, Souta is never one to turn off his phone, or even it’s locator. Although she did fib to CCG about that, despite their dire straits.
Up ahead, she sees a massive cross-shaped kagune that takes her breath away.
They’ve found him anyway.
“Wait!” she calls, stumbling forward. But her voice is weak.
“Wait,” she whimpers, crawling now, picking herself up, launching herself straight at Furuta.
The kagune cuts her back, but it’s not deep. Furuta falls back, and she falls on top of him.
“[Name]?” Furuta looks terrified. If she’s here – she knows – and being known is not something he is used to.
“You don’t have to die, not yet,” she begs between coughs.
“So you did know where he was,” Kaneki comments, but he doesn’t sound angry. If anything, he’s sympathetic.
“I’m not giving up on him – on you,” she spits, turning back to Furuta. She wraps her arms around his bloodied, sweating body and lets her tears soak into his raven hair.
“You should,” Furuta says quietly.
“When have I ever done what I should?” She pulls back to muster a shaky smile. “I love you, Souta. I know. I know everything, and I love you.”
Furuta forgets to breathe.
“We might never have a normal life – but we can try – even if we do and even if we don’t, it’s not worthless, I promise,” she says, tears running down her face.
“I’m too far gone.”
“Wasn’t Kaneki just turned into a literal monster? And he wasn’t.” She looks behind them. “Right?”
Kaneki nods.
“Don’t you want me to die?” Furuta jabs.
“No,” Kaneki says simply.
“I’m never giving up on you. Ever.” She coughs again, but leans her head on Furuta’s shoulder.
His heart flutters. No – he shouldn’t get his hopes up – but –
“Furuta.”
Furuta raises his eyes to see Kaneki holding out a hand. “It’s too toxic for her here. Take her back.”
Furuta nearly laughs. For once, he’s been outsmarted by Kaneki. Because Furuta surely won’t leave her here, so he’ll have to stay alive a while longer.
As he staggers to his feet and holds her close to his chest, he finally has no idea what he’ll do in the future.
Maybe this is how normal people feel.
