“I don’t believe you,” Urie snaps.
“Why not?” Saiko fires back.
“Sensei? How do you know?” Mutsuki leans forward. The Quinx have gathered in the Chateau for a meeting with Sasaki Haise, though he now wants to be called Kaneki.
Higemaru interrupts. “There’s actually … I’ve studied the history of CCG some. Everyone who’s come from the Sunlit Garden has passed away by 35.”
“So you believe him, too?” Saiko asks.
“Why don’t we ask or resident Garden kid?” Aura points at Hsaio. “Tell us he’s crazy.”
Hsaio stares at the floor. Her voice sounds dead. “He’s crazy.”
“You’re a terrible liar,” Urie says, his stomach sinking.
Hsaio looks up at Kaneki. “You can’t fight them. You’ll lose.”
“You’re going to die early? No! I refuse!” Saiko shrieks. She wraps Hsaio in an embrace.
“If – if everything is a lie, how do we move forward?” Mutsuki waits anxiously for Sensei’s answer.
“I don’t know. I think joining with the ghouls already against the Washuus is a good first step,” says Kaneki.
“No,” Aura says. “I can’t betray my aunt.”
“In a way,” says Higemaru, “You’d be betraying her if you let her fight for a lie.”
“But I don’t have anyone else,” Aura whispers.
“You have us,” Kaneki says. “For what little I’m worth.”
“You’re worth a lot to me,” says Mutsuki.
“And me!” cries Saiko.
“We’ll support whatever you decide,” Urie says, nodding at Kaneki. For some reason, that warms his heart the most.
They’re his family.
