“You do not.” Kaneki stares at Eto, who is secure in her cell. He still feels vulnerable, though, because Sen Takatsuki knows how to wield her words.

“I do. I’ve always crushed on you. Does that scare you?” Eto winks.

“No.”

Eto bursts out laughing. “Kaneki, dear – ”

“Don’t call me that!”

“Kaneki, dear, you are such a sweet, pure child at heart. That’s beautiful in this world. Is it any wonder I’m drawn to your light?” Eto shrugs. “Don’t tell me you felt nothing for Sen Takatsuki.”

“Takatsuki doesn’t exist.” A brief memory occurs – him daydreaming about meeting Takatsuki and falling madly in love. She’d tell him he mattered. 

He frowns. Where did that come from?

“Then neither does Haise Sasaki.” 

“Stop!” Kaneki yells. 

“Or – maybe – both are real. Maybe you’re both Sasaki and Kaneki. Maybe both have their worth.” Eto’s eyes soften. “And maybe the best of you involves both of them.”

“You’ve never wanted the best for me!” A laugh rips from Kaneki’s throat.

“Oh, I’ve always wanted. Known what the best was, now, that’s something different, dear.” Eto’s smile is sad.

With a jolt, Kaneki realizes that Takatsuki is here, and telling him she loves him, and that he matters.
