Ui’s parenting vs Hairu’s parenting?

Ui’s an overly-anxious, 100% no all the time kind of dad, but then his guilt overwhelms him. So he tells them to ask Hairu instead.

Because, so long as they’re not asking to drink bleach or play with a quinque, Hairu’s happy to oblige their kid.

Ui’s favorite moments are reading out loud to their kid before they sleep. Hairu’s are whatever adventure she has planned next. Last week they went splashing in puddles.

Their kid is constantly dressed in the silliest costumes that Hairu can’t resist buying. Ui secretly loves showing them off dressed as a shark or a cat or – especially – that one time she dressed them up as Arima.

Ui feels like a failure of a parent. Usually, every request he answers with “No” is immediately taken to Hairu, who says “yes,” then teases him for being overly anxious.

But now their kid has asked something she won’t say “yes” to.

Their kid wants to kill ghouls.

Ui grabs him before he goes and upsets Hairu. “You realize Mommy is part ghoul?”

Their child frowns. “But she’s a good ghoul. I want to fight the bad ones, like you!”

“No one’s bad or good,” Ui says. This is a reality he himself still struggles to accept. “Just bad or good actions.”

“I’m good, right?” His eyes are wide.

“Yes! And I love you.” Ui hugs him tight, just as Hairu sashays in. She throws herself in their love pile without another word.
